What is Misalignment?
Shaft misalignment occurs when the centerlines of rotation of two (or more) machinery shafts are not in line with each other
Consequences of Misalignment
- Bearing, seal, shaft, or coupling failures.
- Loose foundation bolts, leads to ‘‘soft foot’’ condition
- Elevated temperatures at or near the bearings.
- Excessive amount of lubricant leakage at the bearing seals.
- Equipment lower overall operating life
Diagnosing Misalignment
Vibration Analysis
Dominant vibration at (2X) with increased (1X) levels acting in the axial and in either the vertical or horizontal directions.
Thermography (The best technique for detecting Misalignment fault)
Very hot spot indicated at coupling and bearings.
Shaft Alignment Methods: (From lowest to highest accuracy)
Precision Ruler / Face & Rim / Reverse Indicator / Laser Alignment
